Tips / Destination

Florida is home to many alligators. They are all over the state and the people who call Florida home constantly have to be vigilant when it comes to gators. For those visiting the state, they might not be used to sharing space with an animal who could cause serious harm if provoked. These tips will help promote safe encounters between humans and alligators.

To begin, it is more likely to be struck by lightning than to be attacked by a gator. Just because there are alligators in Florida does not mean visitors are attacked regularly or even that they spot alligators every day. Some people visit Florida and never see alligators during their trip. No one should travel to the state with the fear they will be bodily harmed by the creatures.

Alligators are shy animals who avoid human contact. Essentially, if you see an alligator, the best thing to do is to leave it alone and continue about your day. Gators don’t seek out people as a food source and are not focused on taking a bite out of tourists. Leave the alligators alone and there should be no problems. Along with leaving them be, it’s illegal to feed alligators and doing so will attract the attention of the animal.

Stay on high alert when in areas alligators frequent. Alligators are going to be near water, whether it’s fresh or not. The gators will dry up in the hot Florida sun and need to find a source of water for themselves. Always be aware of your surroundings when near bodies of water.
