Rome is one of Europe’s most-visited destinations (if not the top-visited destination) and at no time is this more evident than in the summer. School tour groups, retirees and backpackers descend upon the ancient city in droves, making a leisurely walk through Trastevere a distant hope. But if you find yourself in Rome and face crowds of epic proportions, here are a few ways to get away from the masses and enjoy Rome as more of a vacation destination than a tourist trap.
Visit the Capitoline Museum over the Vatican Museums. The line for the Vatican Museums stretches for blocks, but the Capitoline Museum, which doesn’t see nearly as many visitors, contains a fair amount of Roman art, sculptures and artifacts, including the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter and a central statue of Marcus Aurelius.
Stroll down Via Appia Antica. The ancient street stretches from Rome southward and takes walkers deep into nature while passing historic tombs, aqueducts and ruins.
Dine outside Trastevere, instead of in its heart. Trastevere has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to its bohemian vibe and cutting-edge restaurants, but for more affordable dining options, stick to the outskirts of the thriving district where restaurants are just as good but cost way less.
