Tips / Travel

No matter where you are going, it pays to learn the basics of the local language before you travel.

Everyone learns differently, but one of the most highly recommended ways to pick up a new skill is using an app like Duolingo. Not only do you practice vocabulary, but audio files allow you to pick up on the proper pronunciation, too.

Podcasts or audio books are also a good way of getting in some practice, and you can listen to them wherever you are. Whatever language you want to learn, there will likely be some educational content for beginners online.

If you’ve got the really basic stuff down, try meeting up with a local language group. This way you will be able to practice your skills in a more sociable environment.

Reading texts in your target language isn’t productive for real beginners, but if you get hold of a textbook, you will find targeted exercises appropriate for your skill level.

It takes effort to learn a language, but target the essential things like greetings, numbers and basic questions and you’ll be able to get around okay.
