Summer is coming quickly and you just realized your passport is expired! You go into panic mode because your upcoming trip requires this identification and you need it here as soon as possible. It has been 10 years since you got a new passport and you totally forget where to begin to obtain an updated document. Have no fear — it’s easier than you think.
First, check to see what condition your passport is in. If it has abnormal damage from the typical wear and tear from country hopping, was issued to you when you were under the age of 16 or a few other circumstances, you cannot renew online. Check here to see if you must apply in person.
If you don’t have any of those issues and your passport is in your possession, fill out a DS-82 on the official website. Once all of the fields are filled out with correct, up-to-date information, the website will populate a printable form where you must attach a 2-inch-by-2-inch color photo with a white background. No glasses, hats or masks allowed in the photos. They need to see your full face.
The website will calculate your application fee. Currently a passport book is $110. For an expedited four–six-week turnaround service to make sure you can travel to your upcoming destination, an additional $60 will be charged or you can wait an average 10–12 weeks for free.
Lastly, send the DS-82 form, your new photo, a check written for the calculated amount and your old passport to the National Passport Processing Center.
