How To Research a Destination Before You Go

Compared to Earth Day and Easter, Arbor Day gets little recognition each April. If you lack the resources to plant a tree this year, why not visit one of the oldest forests in the world? These seven are all beautiful reminders to protect our trees. © Filipe Frazao | Dreamstime.com

Tips / Destination

Sitting down to plan a trip can be one of the most exciting things to do, but it can also be one of the most daunting. Travel forums, Facebook groups, guidebooks and blogs await online to douse you with information, sometimes even conflicting information. So once you have your destination in mind, where do you go from there?

First, stick to the big names in trusted travel. Established travel outlets, like trazeetravel.com, Frommers and Fodor’s are usually the best places to start as the writers come with years of experience and are (for the most part) honest in their advice. Dig a bit deeper into forums which offer not only personal advice from travelers who visited your desired destination, but some of which contain itineraries and diaries from those who followed a similar route or activity plan.

Second, search for organized tours on sites like TripAdvisor and Viator. You don’t have to actually book the tours, but the list of search results can give you an idea of what there is to see and do in that location and allows you to explore it on your own without having to pay for the tour service.

Lastly, be wary of blogs. Bloggers can have great insight into generic travel tips, but when mentioning specific services, restaurants or other travel-related brands, they may have received compensation for these promotions. Check for an affiliate disclaimer at the beginning or bottom of each post to confirm.

Going the Distance: Which Airports Have the Longest Walks?

You’re in between flights and ready to find a coffee and your next gate and settle in. But then you find the signs to your gate and look down the impossibly long corridor and wonder how you managed to have the gate at the opposite end of the airport.
