Apple farms can be found almost anywhere in the United States, but autumn is by far the best time to go picking. Follow these tips to get the best bushel possible.

Start Low and Get Sweeter

Avoid trees that have a lot of fallen apples on the ground, as that means they are passed ripe. You’ll want to pick apples a little on the tart side so they last longer. Start low on the tree and grab a ladder if you need to get higher. Pick and twist with your hand and don’t shake the branches.

Don’t Wreck the Barrel

Whoever said, “One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel,” isn’t lying. If one piece is starting to rot in the bag, the rest of the apples will go down with it, so do your best to avoid bruises and nicks in the fruit. Place them gently in the bag, store them in a cool, dry spot and don’t wash the white stuff off until you’re going to eat it.
