Idaho has never been at the top of the list when it comes to adventure destinations in the United States. However, this beautiful state has plenty of hidden gems just waiting to be explored.

Shoshone Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the country. In fact, it’s 50 feet taller than Niagara. The towering cascade not only boasts a bigger drop, but it also lacks the ridiculous crowds. You can easily hop in a kayak and paddle your way to the ferocious waterfall without having to wait in any lines.

Many travelers don’t realize there are sand dunes in Idaho. Bruneau Dunes State Park boasts some of the North America’s largest dunes, with a few of them reaching close to 500 feet. Getting to the top of them is a rough endeavor, and can take upward of one hour, but once you’re there you’ll find it a thrilling ride back to the bottom on a sand board.

If you’re looking to get your adrenaline pumping, look no further than Hells Canyon. The canyon contains one of the deepest gorges in the United States, and is home to the beautiful and dangerous Snake River. The rapids here vary wildly between Class I and Class V, making it a fun, energetic destination. The canyon is remote, so reaching it involves quite a hike if you want to hit the river on foot.

If you’re not quite the adventurous type, but can still handle a mild hike, check out the Goldbug Hot Springs near Elk Bend. They beautiful springs sit atop a two-mile hike and provide stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It’s a favorite among skinny dippers, so you might want to leave the kids behind.
