If you think about drawing thousands of people into subzero temperatures for a music festival, you might think the task an arduous one. Igloofest, in Montreal, proves that wrong.
Igloofest was established in 2007 as a way to get the locals out enjoying winter in January. The electronic music festival now runs for three weekends in January and February and draws thousands to enjoy the weather and music. Meant to be the coldest music festival in the world, Igloofest routinely happens during subzero temperatures. Sometimes, beer freezes before attendees can even drink it.
“It is the only festival where we need a fridge to keep the beer warm,” said François Fournier, publicist, Igloofest.
On a usual night, the festival will draw between 5,000 and 10,000 people, depending on the specific night of the festival. The festival draws some of the biggest EDM acts in the world, as well as local acts on the second stage.
The festival is an awe-inspiring gathering. Everyone has a good time, and the atmosphere is a welcoming and embracing one. The festival is the only one of its kind in the world and the coldest outdoor festival, according to organizers. On the night I visited, the weather was not so severe the beer froze before we could finish it, but, over the hours, cold still seeped through my multiple layers. I loved the spirit of the locals and visitors alike. We even met someone who comes to the festival from New York City every year.
At the very least, Igloofest proves Montreal is a true winter town, and even bitter cold will not keep locals away from good music and good company. If you are not afraid of some chilly weather and have even a moderate like for EDM music, Igloofest is well worth a visit the next time you go to Montreal in January or February. If you are a fan of the cold, EDM or the French language, this is a music festival you cannot afford to miss.
