Boutique hotels are not always small and, while Boise, Idaho, may be one of America’s smaller cities (just squeaking into the top 100 at No. 99, as of the last national census), its premier boutique hotel, Inn at 500 Capitol, is anything but. Centrally located in downtown Boise, the six-floor property may have considerable square footage with its 109 rooms and suites, fitness center, restaurant and event space, but the experience here is decidedly intimate.

Arrivals to and from the airport come by way of the hotel’s complimentary Mercedes car service (look for the personalized license plates) and this free service continues to be available within a four-mile radius of the hotel throughout your entire stay (by appointment). As Boise is not particularly sprawling, the Inn at 500 also maintains a fleet of free cruiser bikes (with helmets and locks) for exploring both the city’s urban areas and its expansive Greenbelt, the 25-mile biking and walking path along the Boise River. New arrivals receive a welcome glass of beer or wine at check-in, and open access to a snack bar with cold water and soft drinks is available 24 hours.

Rooms and suites are spacious with spa-quality bathrooms including double vanities and large walk-in rain showers (some with additional full-body jets) and quaint touches like gas fireplaces and balconies with skyline, mountain and/or park views, but what truly adds a touch of familiarity and flair are the quirky themes that decorate many of the rooms. From Hollywood and Paris to wineries and crystal, there are approximately 30 different themes guiding the individually decorated rooms and suites throughout the hotel, many featuring sculptures, glasswork and painting from local artists for a truly Boise feel. It’s a AAA Four Diamond hotel with all the amenities and luxury of a large property and the small-scale service and intimacy of the boutique that it truly is.
