Aug. 22 was a good day to be a Dorothy. New York City’s The Algonquin Hotel celebrated the birthday of writer Dorothy Parker by offering one complimentary cocktail to all patrons named Dorothy (with proof of identification) that day at The Blue Bar Restaurant & Lounge.
Parker was known for her sharp tongue and incisive insight, and was an Algonquin Round Table regular. The Round Table was a group of NYC writers, critics and actors (they dubbed themselves the “Vicious Circle) who met for lunch each day at The Algonquin Hotel from 1919 until about 1929. The Round Table Restaurant remains a Times Square mainstay today, drawing the city’s literary, artistic and theatrical elite for more than 80 years.

Also on site, The Blue Bar Restaurant & Lounge, one of the most iconic hotel bars in New York City, has welcomed patrons since its opening at the demise of Prohibition in 1933, and features artwork from another Algonquin regular, Al Hirschfeld. The Blue Bar serves literary-themed cocktails and inventive plates alongside live music from performer KT Sullivan. The signature Dorothy Parker cocktail blends Dorothy Parker Gin with apricot and orange bitters.
The Algonquin Hotel has stood as a haven for literary excellence since it opened in 1902, regularly hosting artists, writers and intellectuals like Dorothy Parker.
