The National Maritime Museum in Haifa is a showcase of more than 5,000 years of history in the Mediterranean Basin. It includes artifacts and artwork from the Red Sea and the Nile, and is the best place to learn all about the port city.
The original museum was built in 1958 and was filled with the private collection of philanthropist Arieh Ben-Eli. It stood for nearly 20 years before the maritime museum was moved to its current located near the harbor. Another 20 years later, the Museum of Ancient Art was added and now shares the space with the National Maritime Museum. The ability to essentially visit two museums in one makes it a terrific place to visit in Haifa. Alongside historical collections that feature boats, anchors and maritime art, you can also view depictions of ancient Phoenician and Roman sculptures.
The permanent exhibitions are on the bottom floors of the museum and include interactive displays, along with a wonderful collection of myths and stories surrounding the Mediterranean Basin and Red Sea. Higher up, the museum offers a maritime library open to guests for research. There’s also a separate exhibit focusing on the local Jewish Shipping Factory, a highlight of the trip.
Entrance to the museum is only $10 and I would highly recommend a visit when you’re in Haifa.
