Kakum National Park

Kakum National Park is Ghana’s most popular attraction and after one visit here it’s easy to see why. The stunning canopy walk offers incredible views of the rain forest and puts you up close and personal with the wildlife. It’s an experience I won’t soon forget.

The park is located roughly 90 minutes north of Tarkoradi in the Assin Attandanso Reserve. Visitors are given the opportunity to safely explore the rain forest from above by traversing a series of suspension bridges resting 27 meters above the ground. The walkway itself spans 333 meters and offers a couple of hours of exploration for those who take their time.

Guests are able to explore the park on their own, but I highly recommend a guide. There are so many species of animals in the forest it’s impossible to learn about them all on your own. Our guide was knowledgeable about the various bird species we encountered, of which there are more than 300 in the park. There are also more than 600 butterfly species to be found. We were also lucky enough to spot a few elephants and plenty of monkeys, but never managed to see any of the leopards that inhabit the region. The only downside of the experience is the height of the canopy makes it impossible to see much happening on the ground, though I suppose that’s why it’s safer.

Other highlights of the trip included a dance performed by a local cultural group and the evening concert put on by the orchestra. We were told there were night tours available too, but didn’t have time to give them a try.
