When it comes to the top places to search for flight deals, Kayak is usually quite high on budget travelers’ lists, which makes it one of the best sources to collect data on travel trends based on searches. According to Kayak’s annual Hacker Guide, here are the site’s most-searched-for destinations for 2019.
First on the list is Mexico City, which saw a search increase of 73 percent. Travelers flock south of the border for the city’s ever-evolving food scene, warm weather, lively atmosphere and vibrant Latin culture. Guadalajara, Mexico, also made the list at No. 5, with a 43 percent increase in searches.
Bali came in at No. 2, no surprise if you’ve recently chatted with nearly any millennial on the subject of travel. Young professionals love this Asian island for its beautiful beaches, temples and forests, and ample opportunities to relax. It’s also a popular place for co-working and digital nomads.
Also in Asia, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) experienced a 49 percent increase in searches on Kayak, with popular search dates of spring and fall.
Nos. 6, 7 and 8 belong to the European metropolises of Lisbon, Paris and Rome, respectively, fairly surprising considering the amount of tourists that flock to the latter two cities each year. Munich hit No. 10 but not in the overly obvious months of September, October and December. Munich’s array of art galleries and world-class exhibitions are a likely reason for the recent popularity.
European cities were broken up by Maui, Hawai’i, which ranked ninth.
