The port city of Bordeaux in France is a cultural hot spot and hub of French wine country. With more than 300 historical monuments and one of the most charming downtowns in the country, it’s becoming increasingly popular among LGBTQ+ travelers.

Bordeaux has a wealth of gay bars and restaurants to choose from, including the popular dance club Coco Loko. For a more casual night on the town, you’ll want to check out Le Trou Duck or Ultra Klubs. The city also hosts an annual Pride festival each June. Throughout the year you can also experience the Cinémarges, the local LGBTQ+ film festival.

Wine country is only seven miles out of town and your first stop should be the beautiful Maisons du Vin. You can learn about the history of the local wine economy and sign up for any of the numerous tours available.

Bordeaux is packed with delicious eateries, chief among them is Le Bistro du Musée. This stunning restaurant is directly opposite the cathedral and boasts a gorgeous interior showcasing vineyard tools and quotes by famous French writers. The food itself is traditional southwestern French fare. Chez Pompon is another great option. It’s one of the oldest brasseries in town — more than 100 years — and hosts dancing and tapas.

The Chartrons district is Bordeaux’s hippest neighborhood and an excellent place to browse chic boutiques along with vintage paintings adorning the converted warehouses. You’ll also want to take a stroll along the Place de la Bourse and maybe take a dip in the enormous Water Mirror.

Bordeaux is very gay-friendly so you won’t have trouble finding accommodations, but the InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hotel easily offers the most bang for your buck.
