Brussels has long been one of the most progressive and liberal cities in Europe, so it’s no surprise the Belgium city is LGBTQ+-friendly. In addition to the annual Belgian Lesbian and Gay Pride in May and the LGBTQ Film Festival in January, you’ll also find a wealth of gay-friendly clubs and restaurants.
LGBTQ+ life is centered on the Saint-Jacques neighborhood, affectionately called the Gay Village, near the city center. Le Bélgica is the most popular bar in town, with a large dance floor and live DJ. Amalgame is another great option if you’re looking to cut loose. La Boule Rouge is where to find the comedy and drag queens, while La Reserve is a Brussels staple and wonderful place for a chill evening with friends.
Every hotel in Brussels caters to LGBTQ+ clientele, but there are a few truly unique options you might want to try. The Train Hostel, as it sounds, offers rooms in a renovated train carriage on top of the Brussels Train Museum. 9Hotel Central, on the other hand, is a modern, industrial hotel with exposed brick and great deals on the weekends.
When exploring town be sure to stop by the famous Mannekin Pis, a fountain of small boy peeing. Don’t forget to stroll through the historic Old Town and visit the Atomium, a massive monument with a viewing platform that provides epic overlooks of the city.
Brussels might not be the most famous city in Europe, but it certainly is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly, and is well worth a trip.
