While Thailand has always had something of a conservative political climate, it also has long been a particularly welcoming place to the LGBTQ+ community. The small, northern city of Chiang Mai has a surprisingly large array of gay nightlife and plenty of opportunities for fun throughout the day.
Chiang Mai is home to one of the country’s largest elephant sanctuaries. The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary houses dozens of the intelligent creatures and allows you to get up close and personal. They’re always in need of volunteers, and are happy to let you help bathe and feed them. You can also head into the hills with a guide and visit the Karen Long Neck ethnic hill tribe or the Chiang Dao Cave.
When night falls, you’ll want to discover the various night markets spread around town. During the weekend you can spend hours getting lost browsing the shops and collecting trinkets. Once you’re ready to have a drink and cut loose, make your way over to Ram Bar. This popular gay hot spot is located near the night market and features outdoor seating, go-go dancers, drag shows and great music. There’s also Pandee Bar, a newer addition to the area easily spotted due to its bright décor. Pandee serves up delicious cocktails alongside fruit shakes and ice cream for a more laidback feel.
Chiang Mai’s welcoming atmosphere makes it the perfect place in Southeast Asia for any LGBTQ+ traveler to spend a weekend.
