For LGBTQ+ travelers looking to visit South America, consider a trip to Colombia.
The country was ranked 23rd out of 197 countries on the Gay Travel Index 2019. Same-sex marriage is legal in Colombia. As of 2015, gay and lesbian couples have the right to adopt children. There are anti-discrimination laws throughout the country to protect the LGBTQ+ population. The country has an ever-growing list of LGBTQ+ community organizations.
Colombia’s cities are the best places to start for LGBTQ+ travel. Bogotá is home to a vibrant nightlife scene, with many LGBTQ+ bars and nightclubs, particularly in the Chapinero neighborhood. The city also hosts several annual festivals, including Bogotá Pride and Equality Week.
Medellín is known for its warm and inviting attitude toward visitors. The city hosts an annual pride parade in June. There are plenty of LGBTQ+ bars and nightclubs in Medellín.
The port city of Barranquilla hosts a popular annual Barranquilla Carnival. There is a special LGBTQ+ portion of the four-day event, Guacherna Gay. The pride parade has been a part of Carnival since the 1980s, though it was officially named in 2002.
Cartagena also hosts an annual LGBTQ+ event, Cartagena Pride, in August.
As with any international travel, be aware of your safety and surroundings when visiting a new destination.
