Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador and, as such, has one of the largest LGBTQ+ populations in the country. The gay scene here is low key, but you’ll find plenty of bars and incredible attractions to keep you busy during your stay.

The city’s Neoclassical buildings are a large draw for tourists, and they’re sprinkled all throughout the city. The Catedral Metropolitana de Guayaquil in particular isn’t a can’t miss and is located right near the center of town. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the vast amount of green spaces the city has to offer. In and around the city you’ll find the Iguana Park, the Parque Histórico Guayaquil and the Manglares Churute Ecologic Reserve. Historians will appreciate the Museo Presley Norton, home to one of the best collections of pre-Columbian artifacts from the Valdivia culture.

In addition to the wealth of tourist attractions, Guayaquil boasts an impressive bar scene. Peuteo and Fiesta Jolie are two of the more popular LGBTQ+ bars in town, and both offer live music and a dance floor. Flux is a great option for travelers looking for something a little more laidback with a local vibe.

When it comes to dining, Pride Café is a casual café and bar that serves up healthy options and excellent cappuccinos.

While Ecuador still has a ways to go when it comes to securing equal rights for same sex partners, it’s clear Guayaquil is leading the way in the fight. While pockets of conservatism still remain, you’ll find the younger generation in the city is warm and welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community.

Discover Intangible Riches on Inspiring Milestone Trips the World Over

It’s a truth universally acknowledged: Not every trip is created equal. Some are for family or social obligations, where the tropical island remains largely unexplored in lieu of birthday lunches, rehearsal dinners or your cousin’s graduation ceremony. Others are strictly business, where the nearby ski resort seems as hypothetical as your Q4 plans on the whiteboard in the corporate boardroom. Of course, the best trips are strictly for pleasure — the long-awaited vacation you’ve plotted (and saved airline miles) for months on end.
