Trends / LGBTQIA+

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, is home to a constantly growing and thriving gay scene. The tropical destination has long led the way in gay tourism and offers up many spectacular attractions and shopping opportunities. Best of all, it has a surprisingly open and tolerant population.

Manuel Antonio has many beaches, including Playa Espadilla and Playa Playitas. It’s at these sandy spots where you’ll find the majority of LGBTQ+ travelers and locals soaking up some sun. If you’re looking for something a little more risqué, the folks at Playa Machas have been known to stroll around sans bathing suits.

In the evening, you’ll find great options for a night on the town. Club Karma is located beneath Victoria’s Restaurant and is the most popular LGBTQ+ club in Manuel Antonio. Here you’ll find great music and plenty of delicious drinks after 10 p.m. MoGamBo BarCafé is another great option, though slightly more laidback than Club Karma.

Outside of the city limits there are numerous options for adventure, starting with Manuel Antonio National Park. Though the smallest of Costa Rica’s national parks, some argue it’s the most beautiful — it was named one of the 12 most beautiful in the world. The Si Como No wildlife refuge offers night walks that highlight some of the region’s more elusive creatures, while just north of Playa Espadilla you can find excellent parasailing adventures.

Manuel Antonio is one of Central America’s beachside gems and a fantastic and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ travelers.
