Tips / Destination

Lisbon is a beautiful city in Portugal, perfect for budget-conscious travelers who want to experience Europe. The destination rose in popularity over recent years, due in part to its accessibility, cost and beauty.

Getting Around

Airfare to Lisbon Airport can be reasonable, depending on your origin city and time of booking. Plan at least six months out and price check the airports nearest you. Once in the city, you should be able to explore mostly by foot. In fact, many attractions located on the hilly streets are easier reached by walking. The city boasts an inexpensive, easy-to-navigate public transportation system. These options are ideal for daytrips to locations outside the city center including Belem and Sintra.

In Town

Lisbon offers a variety of low-cost lodging options from Airbnbs to hostels. If you prefer a hotel, many properties will still fit within your budget. The city has plenty of inexpensive dining and cultural attractions. Entrance to the Carmo Archaeological Museum costs about $6. Or explore the popular Castelo de São Jorge for a $10 entrance fee. Grab a sweet treat at Confeitaria Nacional. The pastry shop offers traditional desserts and pastries, some for less than $2 each. Stop by the Time Out Market if you want to pick and choose local dishes. Many restaurants offer bottles of wine for less than $10, so opt to split a bottle with your group instead of each ordering a pricey cocktail. Make sure you stop in a shop selling the Portuguese liqueur ginja. Most small bodegas sell a portion for $1–2.
