Tips / Travel

Making friends abroad can be daunting, but it’s no different than making friends at your home university. Everyone who studies abroad wants to be able to say they made friends with the locals while in their town. Good news is the locals also want to be friends with you. They look forward to creating lasting relationships with international students. It benefits both groups of people to connect and forge a friendship.

The easiest way to make friends in your new city is to join a group or club. Just like your home university, your new university will also have sports teams, clubs and groups that meet regularly. This is a great way to meet people with similar interests versus introducing yourself to those that don’t share common interests.

Those first few weeks of school will be filled with events and opportunities to make friends with those around you. Go to these events and introduce yourself to as many people as possible; you never know who is going to become your next best friend. The events are also fun and will get you out of your room and into the new city. It will help you get rid of any awkwardness or jitters you have over moving to a new country.

After making these friends, keep in contact with them. Don’t let the friendships die from lack of communication. Reach out to these friends and make regular plans with them.
