Get away from the tourist crowds in Florence and Rome with a visit to some of southern Italy’s most spectacular national parks.
Gargano National Park, near the city of Puglia, boasts some amazing beaches with crystal-clear water. It’s also packed with citrus and olive trees growing on rolling mountains, punctuated by traditional villages.
Cilento National Park is on the west coast of the country, south of Naples. You can get here in less than two hours from the city, which makes it a great spot for combining a cultural break with some more natural pursuits. Take a hike in the mountains and make sure to visit Cape Palinuro and Roscigno.
Aspromonte National Park sits on the tip of Italy’s boot, and is home to some amazing wildlife including wolves and peregrine falcons, while Vesuvius National Park includes the volcano that engulfed the city of Pompei in ash during an eruption in 79AD. You can easily make a daytrip here from Naples to see the volcano and the ruins left by the eruption.
Alta Murgia National Park is in the Apulia region, and sits on a large limestone plateau. The top attraction is Castel de Monte, a hilltop castle.
