Originally established in 1868, Hampton University Museum is the oldest African American museum in the United States, as well as the oldest museum overall in Virginia. Following an extensive renovation, the museum reopened and expanded, offering new experiences for visitors.
Already known as home to one of the most comprehensive collections of African American, African and Indigenous art in the United States, as well as home to the world’s first collection of African American fine art, the museum now showcases some newly acquired works and larger galleries combining history and culture. New features range from an exhibit highlighting university alumni who served in the armed forces to an exhibit of costumes designed by Oscar winner Ruth E. Carter.
“The Hampton University Museum is not just a repository of art; it’s a living testament to the resilience of Black artists and the power of storytelling through art,” said Dr. Vanessa Thaxton-Ward, director, Hampton University Museum. “Our collections and exhibitions remind the world that Black art isn’t peripheral but central to the broader narrative of American history.”
“For more than 150 years, the Hampton University Museum has been a national leader in preserving and celebrating African American and Indigenous art and culture,” added Darrell K. Williams, president, Hampton University. “This reopening marks a new chapter in our commitment to education, preservation and community engagement.”
The museum is free and open to the public.
