New Orleans is home to a bevy of great museums, and the city just welcomed its most recent addition to the roster: New Orleans Storyville Museum. Storyville, a historic New Orleans neighborhood, experienced its heyday in the late 1800s and early 1900s when it served as not only the city’s red-light district, but also a hub for other illegal activity and entertainment.
The small museum stretches across more than 7,000 square feet, and exhibits touch on the neighborhood’s establishment and its significance as the largest red-light district in U.S. history, as well as New Orleans’ greater significance as a city of vice (did you know, for example, New Orleans is the birthplace of popular casino games such as poker and craps?).
“At the New Orleans Storyville Museum, we are committed to entertaining educating and informing,” said Claus Sadlier, founder and curator, New Orleans Storyville Museum. “Our exhibits not only shine light on the social and economic impacts of the Storyville District but also celebrate the cultural heritage that makes New Orleans unique.”
The museum is located at 1010 Conti St. in the French Quarter, open Thursday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Admission is $31.50, restricted to those ages 18 and up.
