Traveling with a pet is stressful, which is why it’s important to plan ahead. Knowing what to pack in your pet’s travel bag can save you from plenty of headaches along the way. Make sure to have these items ready to go before boarding your plane or hitting the road with your favorite dog or feline friend.
Food
If you’re leaving the country there’s no way to know whether they’ll carry your pet’s food at your destination. This is particularly worrisome if your furry friend is on a special diet. Be sure to measure out the right amount of food you’ll need for the length of the trip, with a little extra in case of emergency.
Medicine
You wouldn’t leave for a trip without your meds, so your dog or cat shouldn’t either. Be sure to have any medications on hand, including flea and tick if they’re coming due. Chat with your veterinarian about any possible medications that might help relieve stress on an airplane, and pack that along, too.
Harnesses and Leash
A lot of countries, and even cities in the United States, have strict laws about controlling your pets in public. Research ahead of time and be prepared to pack any harnesses and leashes you might need. You might also need an extra harness for strapping your pet into a car.
Medical Records
Do not leave home without a copy of your pet’s medical records. Fingers crossed nothing will go wrong, but in the event of an accident, an emergency vet will need to know about your pet’s health before providing treatment. Having these on hand can save tons of time and mean the difference between life and death.
Toys
Your pet is going to need to release plenty of energy each day, so pack along some of his favorite toys. They’ll make him feel more at home in hotel rooms or Airbnbs, while also keeping him busy while you’re trying to rest after a long day.
Cleaning Supplies
Pets are messy. The stress of travel could cause your pet to forget their training and have an accident in your hotel room. You’ll need to have cleaning supplies on hand to get rid of those stains, unless you want to pay a hefty bill upon check-out.
