With about a dozen countries to choose from when deciding where to go for an African safari, Kenya is one of the more popular choices. Its proximity to quite a few natural reserves as well as Lake Victoria make it a good central point from which to start a safari adventure. Regardless of when you decide to embark on your safari, consider packing the following items to prepare yourself for a week (or more) in the African wilderness.
Keep it light. Due to the volatility of the weather depending on your location within Kenya, you’ll want to prepare yourself with breathable fabrics that wick sweat and keep you comfortable. If you plan on staying at safari camps, you can pack even lighter as some camps have laundry facilities for an extra fee.
Another reason to pack light is if your trip includes transit by bush plane. These planes have strict luggage weight limits of 33 pounds per person, which includes both hand luggage and larger luggage. Consider packing in a soft suitcase or duffel bag as opposed to a hard-shell suitcase, which will make it easier to cram your bag into small planes and ground vehicles.
Leave the plastic bags at home. Plastic bags of any size and style are prohibited in Kenya, so pack your carry-on liquids in a see-through packing cube or toiletry bag. Penalties for bringing plastic bags into the country include fines.
Pack earth tones. Bright colors like red or white can clue animals into a potential threat, while tsetse flies are known to be attracted to blue and black. Therefore, stick to clothing in neutral earth tones.
