Whether 10 years have passed or you’ve filled your passport book with stamps, the time will inevitably come to renew your passport. Or, if you’ve planned your first trip abroad, it may be time to apply for your first passport. Whether you’re applying or renewing, here are a few pieces of advice for the process.
Read the photo requirements. While it may feel natural to smile for your photo, this is no longer allowed, nor is wearing glasses or a hat. The background must be white or off-white, and the photo must be color instead of black and white.
Allow enough time for processing before departure. The initial application and renewal can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the consulate and how many applications they have. Allow yourself plenty of time to update your passport before your departure date.
Heed the mailing instructions. Some consulates ask you to mail your items and they will return the document to you by mail. Others will require you to collect your passport in person. If you need to do one or the other due to time restrictions or distance from the consulate, contact them directly to explain your situation and avoid potentially losing your passport in the post.
