The Green River runs from Flaming Gorge National Recreational Area in Utah all the way through to the Colorado River at Canyonlands National Park. It passes through some of the state’s most rugged and gorgeous landscapes and is a popular river for whitewater rafting.

Southern Utah is where the greatest opportunities for rafting lie, with the route through the Desolation Canyon named one of America’s Top 10 Rivers. This portion of the Green River carves directly through the Colorado Plateau and showcases some of the most dramatic canyon landscapes in the world. The region boasts more than 60 separate rapids, ranging from simple Class I to roaring Class Vs after a good rainfall. With plenty of rafting outfitters set up in the area, both beginners and experienced alike can enjoy the challenge.

One of the reasons the Green River is so beloved is because there is a ton to see and do along the shores of the river as you go along. The region was once a popular hiding spot for outlaws, with remnants of their hideouts still intact. There are also dozens of Native American petroglyphs and ancient dinosaur bones and habitats throughout Desolation Canyon and other portions along the river.

A couple of excellent outfitters include the Moab Adventure Center and Western River Expeditions. Check out the websites for more information on available trips and the best time to go.

Going the Distance: Which Airports Have the Longest Walks?

You’re in between flights and ready to find a coffee and your next gate and settle in. But then you find the signs to your gate and look down the impossibly long corridor and wonder how you managed to have the gate at the opposite end of the airport.
