Reviews / Restaurant

As a major international city with residents from all over the world, it’s not too difficult to find the precise cuisine you’re craving on any given day in Barcelona. But if you happen to be craving a modern take on Singaporean street food, you’re in luck: Hawker 45 in Barcelona’s Eixample neighborhood specializes in street food not only from Singapore, but also from other Asian countries like the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Some dishes even have a touch of Latin American influence, making Hawker 45 a true confluence of cultures and cuisines.

Named after the famed food markets in Singapore, the restaurant has an open-plan kitchen so that from a bar seat, you can see (and smell!) everything the chefs are making, just like the hawkers in Singapore.

The menu is a cornucopia of dishes with Asian and Latin American influence, each of which is marked with a three-letter indicator that shows where the dish garnered the most influence. For example, the chicken masal with pickles, spring onion and banana leaf rice is marked with a PHL to denote its Filipino roots, while the Rendang curry is marked with IND, for India. Other examples include the lamb satay with peanut relish and roti bread (MYS, Malaysia); Kalbi short ribs, ssamjang rice cakes and pepper threads (KOR, Korea); and the grilled octopus with quinoa, sweet potato and chimichurri of Peruvian pepper (PER, Peru).

Hawker 45 also offers a tasting menu of six plates chosen by the chef for around $38, with options to add beer or cocktail pairings.
