The small colonial town of Valladolid in the center of the Yucatan peninsula is easy to see in a day or two, but when you’re not roaming the streets, snapping photos of the brightly colored houses and buildings, swimming in the nearby cenote or admiring the architecture of the 16th-century convent of San Bernardino de Siena, consider passing time in the multipurpose Hostería del Marqués, a hotel that offers more than just lodging.
Located on the northern border of Valladolid’s main square, the hotel appears to be a mansion from the outside, and the interior doesn’t do much to change your mind about the building’s origins. The 17th-century central courtyard quickly comes into view and is surrounded by hanging green ferns and white tableclothed tables where both guests and non-guests can grab a seat for a traditional Yucatan meal, including meat dishes grilled next to your table.
After eating, move out to the pool bar for an al fresco cocktail before heading out into the main square, or retreat to one of the 90 guestrooms, among which are eight suites, 48 superior rooms and 32 standard rooms. Guests can enjoy 24-hour room service and reception, safe parking, laundry service and terraces with views of the church of San Servacio across the square.
Serving as hotel for more than 50 years, the hosteria developed its own tourism programs to help guests learn about and decide what to do, such as visit the Mayan ruins at Ek Balam or Chichen Itza, take a daytrip to Las Coloradas (a pink beach) and more.

Apr 12, 2024How to Explore Neuschwanstein Castle
Most people know Neuschwanstein Castle as Walt Disney’s inspiration for both Cinderella’s and Sleeping Beauty’s castles, but it is also filled with history and stories from German royalty. In 1868, King Ludwig II began construction of the medieval-style castle to live in. Sadly, it wasn’t finished before he died, so the king never got to see the finished product. Today, the castle is privately owned, but travelers can still explore it on a guided audio tour.
