Destinations / Europe

This historic café-restaurant is found in the Saint German neighborhood, not far from Notre Dame cathedral.

It is listed as a historic monument, and people come from all around to soak up the atmosphere. It’s a typical Parisian establishment, terrace tables for the smokers giving way to a dark wood interior, and the staff could also have stepped out of a film.

Smartly dressed and brusque, they bring your order when they see fit. It’s not the best service in the world, but the food and the atmosphere more than makes up for it.

The meat and cheese platter makes a great starter for larger groups and the sandwiches are among the best I’ve had. The croque monsieur, and the madame with additional egg, come served open on long slices of bread from a local boulangerie. It’s a distinctive touch which makes the place memorable, as does the decent wine list.

You’re looking at around $30 per person for lunch and drink, which is great value in order to be able to experience a local institution. Don’t come here if you are looking for a quick bite on the way to the next site; this is a place to be savored, and the staff will make you stay for a while even if you don’t really want to.
