The Argentinian coastline contains some of the most beautiful landscapes in all of South America, both above and below the water. The country sees a surprisingly large array of sea life throughout the year. That’s why scuba diving off the shores of the Valdes Peninsula is a rare opportunity every traveler should try.

The Valdes Peninsula lies roughly 1,000 kilometers from Buenos Aires and juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The strip of land connecting it to the mainland is only 5 kilometers wide, but it hosts dozens of unique species and plant life. The peninsula was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Depending on the time of year you might see creatures you can’t find anywhere else.

Between the months of July and December, Southern Right whales flock to the area by the hundreds. Shortly after, flocks of Magellan penguins migrate to the region between October and March. An estimated 500,000 of the flightless birds call the peninsula home. As the penguins begin to arrive, the native elephant seals are just beginning to give birth. Come December, the sea lions arrive. When these creatures all start their migration away from the peninsula, orcas can be found looking to catch a quick meal.

When you’re not diving, there’s plenty to find on land. Armadillos, guanacos and gray foxes all call the Valdes Peninsula home. Argentina Excepción offers excellent sea lion tours that offer ample opportunity to explore the diverse region. Check out its website for more information on tour dates and ways to book.
