Signs Your Hotel is Not Safe

Tips / Safety

Hotel safety is one of the primary concerns of many travelers. It’s hard to get a good night’s rest when you’re worried about someone breaking down the door. There are a few things to watch out for when it comes to picking the right place.

The Neighborhood

When booking a hotel from afar be sure to research the neighborhood before you commit. If it’s in a shady area you’re better off shelling out a few more bucks for something more secure.

Is it Staffed?

Safe hotels all have one thing in common: 24/7 front desk staff. Someone should always be manning the desk. This ensures only guests are permitted to pass into the hotel. Round-the-clock groundskeepers will also prevent potential thieves from peering through windows.

Good Locks

Your hotel room should have nearly impenetrable locks on the door. Key card access is a good sign as key locks can be picked. The windows should also have solid locks on them to prevent someone getting in from outside.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness is a sign the hotel is well cared for and the staff is on top of things. A dirty hotel shows a lack of concern and can be a breeding ground for shady activity. Check to see if the hotel room is as clean as the lobby.

Lighting

Lighting should be one of the biggest concerns when choosing a hotel. Is the parking lot well lit? The hallways? The more lights around, the less likely criminals will choose the hotel as a target.
