Sirenian Bay Resort & Villas invites guests to celebrate Earth Month with the launch of its manatee conservation efforts. The 12-acre luxury resort in Placencia, Belize, prides itself on its sustainability and social responsibility efforts. The theme for Earth Day 2022 is Invest in Our Planet.
The resort’s name pays homage to manatees’ scientific name, sirenians. As tourism grows in Belize, the local manatees are increasingly exposed to danger. This April, for Earth Month, the resort pledges to make monthly donations to manatee conservation efforts, with $1 from the sale of a themed cocktail donated to Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research, a local manatee conservation organization. Guests are encouraged to use reef-safe sunscreen and limit single-use plastics, harmful to the local aquatic life. The resort will debut additional manatee conservation programs later in 2022.
Beyond the manatee conservation efforts, the resort supports the local community and practices sustainable customs. Local contractors and artisans created the unique mahogany furniture in guestrooms. The resort also recently established its own on-site wood shop for the in-house production of more pieces of furniture. Many pieces are made with repurposed driftwood or other leftover wood from projects. The resort’s restaurants utilize the on-site organic garden for menu ingredients. The master gardener uses the vegetable scraps for compost and local seagrass as fertilizer. Sirenian Bay is also involved in community initiatives, including backpack drives at local schools and sponsoring local youth sports teams.
