If you find yourself in a place with white-sand beaches and crystal-blue water, then you will probably be at least tempted to scuba dive. If that seems a little too intense, you might want to give snorkeling a try. Snorkeling is a fairly straightforward way of getting a better view of what lies beneath. You need significantly less equipment and can access your aquatic playground from shore instead of a boat. It is important, however, to follow certain procedures and keep some safety tips in mind.
First things first, you should rent your gear to get started. It is important your mask, snorkel and fins fit you properly since, if they are loose, they will not do you much good. Unless you are an experienced snorkeler, in which case you probably will not be reading this, be sure to take at least one other person with you. You will be in open water and it is important to have a support system in place in case something goes wrong. Like with swimming, pay attention to the shape the water is in; if it is rough, don’t go, but even if it is placid make sure to be aware of the strength of the surf and current and where there might be some danger areas, like reefs, rocks, jelly fish or sea urchin. Lastly, always face the ocean, be aware of the direction you are facing so you can be aware of how far out you have gone, or if there is any dangerous weather coming your way.
Have fun!
