Where to Stay to Escape the Tourist Crowds in Hawai’i

Tips / Destination

Hawai’i is popular for a reason — it’s spectacular. If you want a relaxing, stress-free getaway, though, some of the crowds can conflict with your goals. Avoid the heavy tourist traffic with stays in these areas.

Maui’s North Shore

The west side of Maui is the most popular, for sure. The North Shore, on the other hand, is more authentic, with more locals and a lot of boutique hotels, shops and restaurants. The relaxed vibe is a great complement to your stress-free vacation. Choose your local property carefully and you’ll be treated to a one-of-a-kind experience.

Oahu’s North Shore

Likewise, on Oahu, the North Shore is a little more relaxed, once you get away from Waikiki. It’s only a one-hour drive and you’ll enjoy every second of the scenic experience. Historic Haleiwa Town is a favorite, with lots of cute eateries, art galleries and shopping. Choose from seven miles of beach and explore the more isolated area of Mokuleia.

Kaua’i

The Garden Island is the fourth-most visited island, which means there’s significantly fewer tourists. In fact, Kaua’i only gets about a fourth of the visitors Oahu receives, and about half the visitors Maui receives. It’s a shame, because Kaua’i has gorgeous scenery, great beaches and a good level of seclusion. Dramatic mountain scenery is abundant on the island’s north shore, and the south shore offers lots of sunny spots. On the west coast, though, is where you’ll really get some privacy, nut the hotels are sparse. The Waimea Canyon is located here, called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
