Philadelphia is a city rich with history and converging cultures. It is perhaps the greatest epicenter of art, media, and diverse cuisine in all of Pennsylvania. However, it can also be a dangerous place if you don’t know what you are getting into. For travelers looking to explore the City of Brotherly Love, knowing how to stay safe is of great importance.
Stick To The Right Areas
While venturing out into the unknown to discover the different shops and eateries of the city is fine during the day, travelers should try to be more aware of their surroundings after dark. Sticking to high-traffic areas is ideal, but not always realistic. If you must travel on side streets, at the very least stay in well-lit areas. Additionally, neighborhoods close to the city’s many colleges are often wise routes because of their heavy security and blue emergency call boxes for those in danger.
Beware of Street Con Artists
Philadelphia is famous not only for its talented street performers, but its street con artists. Whether you are on the subway, outside city hall or even enjoying a sunny day at Rittenhouse Square Park, you’re likely to find a charismatic entrepreneur who wants to trick you into giving up your money.
Use A Cab Late At Night
SEPTA, Philly’s subway system, can be troublesome late at night. If possible, try to take a taxi to your destination. If you are forced to use the subway, make sure to put your wallet in your front pocket to avoid pickpocketing in the cramped train.
Look Out For Roves of Children
Younger people of the city have historically been known to act out against strangers. Flash mobs of youths can appear out of nowhere and vandalize property, as well as violently lash out against bystanders. In the last few years, some groups of young Philadelphians have taken part in hitting strangers with bricks for entertainment, an activity commonly referred to as “the brick game.”
