There are a lot of dangers when you go to the beach — riptides, shark attacks, a particularly nasty sunburn. However, some beaches are more dangerous than others. One law firm decided to identify which beaches pose the greatest hazard to your safety. This study created a composite risk index based on quantifiable metrics including shark attacks, attacks per mile, hurricanes and estimated annual rescues.

So, what did the data say? In 2025, the most dangerous beach you could visit in the United States is New Smyrna Beach in Florida. This beach destination gets its ranking due to its nearly 200 recorded shark attacks, with nearly 11 attacks per mile of beach and 1,200 annual rescues. The destination likewise experiences annual hurricane activity.

While Miami Beach doesn’t see nearly as many shark attacks, it still ranked in second place due to its 1,500 recorded rescues per year, as well as its consistent hurricane activity.

In third place is Waikiki Beach, Hawai’i, with 1,800 rescues annually.

Other most dangerous beaches to make the study’s top 10 include Jacksonville Beach, Florida; Cocoa Beach, Florida; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Melbourne Beach, Florida; Panama City Beach, Florida; Santa Monica Beach, California; and Jupiter Beach, Florida.
