On July 23, the world’s first terminal dedicated to a prominent figure of the gay community opened at San Francisco International Airport. Harvey Milk Terminal 1 commemorates California’s first openly gay elected official who served on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors for 11 months in the late 1970s.
In honor of the LGBTQ+ activist, the terminal opened the airport’s first gender-neutral restroom, as well as separate men’s and women’s restrooms. The terminal also will feature a 30-foot-by-380-foot wall with an exhibit, “Harvey Milk: Messenger of Hope,” which will serve as a veritable museum of 97 images and artifacts, such as photos, correspondence and campaign memorabilia from Milk’s life.
The terminal will include Boarding Area B which comprises nine domestic and international gates. The nine gates serve Southwest and JetBlue flights, and this area of the terminal also offers travelers free WiFi, a kids’ playground, a yoga room and even a place for traveling pets to relieve themselves. Travelers can find refreshments at one of six food and beverage stalls, including local eateries like Amy’s Organic Drive-Thru, Vietnamese sandwich shop Bun Mee and the Little Chihuahua, a fast-casual Mexican restaurant.
Harvey Milk Terminal 1 is officially open, but expansion will continue through 2023, when the final product will include 25 gates, three lounges, 20 retail outlets and 14 food and beverage options.
