Romance. Kids clubs. Family reunions. When it comes to cruises, togetherness seems to be the norm. But what if you’re an avid solo traveler who happens to really love cruising? More cruise lines are responding to the rise of solo travel and catering to those of us hungry for more adventure with customized trips and itineraries.
Crystal Cruises
A popular option for solo luxury cruises, Crystal Cruises features singles parties, solo activities, gentleman hosts for dancing and dining, and accommodations for solo diners who want to eat together. Activities are often explicitly geared toward solo travelers with golf clinics taught by PGA pros and Pilates, as well as language instruction and art lessons. Unlike many cruise lines, Crystal Cruises’ single rooms all have ocean views, and more than half come with verandas. Travelers can also keep an eye out for discounts for solo travelers.
Norwegian Cruise Lines
Norwegian Cruise Lines introduced its first solo cabins with the Norwegian Epic before following suit with Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway. Norwegian Cruise Lines’ solo rooms feature all the amenities of group cruises with a full-sized bed, flat-screen TV and bathroom in a smaller space. But the real perk is an exclusive, shared social space to meet other solo travelers, hang out and have a drink with an on-site bartender.
Holland America
Holland America has quietly catered to solo cruises for years. Aside from the usual solo activities offered like culinary programs or wine tastings, its Single Partners Program also hosts onboard events for solo travelers who want to get together. Holland also rolled out its own solo cabins with right-sized amenities and the option for singles-only dinners.
Solo travelers don’t have to let couples and families have all the fun. Pack a bag, pick your activities and enjoy the serenity of traveling alone and getting to choose anything you want for your solo itinerary.
