As summer wanes and refreshing summer cocktails and light sangrias fade into the background, you might wond, what now? Fall will soon be here and with it comes a broad array of options, especially for lovers of red wine. Even if you don’t know much about wine, you still probably tell yourself red wine is the healthiest option and, in some ways, it truly is. It is rich in resveratrol, an antioxidant, which, even if it is not a miracle drug for your heart, it certainly does not hurt.

Of course, you have to keep consumption in moderation, but delving into the richer red options is one of the best parts about fall, besides the baked goods, fireplaces and impending holiday season. What are your options?

If you usually stick to the basics, like Cabernet Sauvignon or Bordeaux, then good on you. But let the colder temperatures of fall convince you to branch out into bolder flavors. A Pinot Noir is a natural shift from the lighter red wines, but, if you want to be even bolder, try a Rioja, like Marqués de Cáceres, an excellent choice for less than $20. Alternatively, if the tannins are a little too much in the Rioja, go for a Malbec, it is on the lighter side. Try a Trivento Golden Reserve for less than $20 and, if you want to get more daring, try a Sardinian Cannonau. This red wine is not for the faint of heart, but it is the perfect complement to any plate of pasta. Tuck in for a long, happy winter ahead!
