The Crane, Barbados

The Crane Barbados sits on one of the world’s best beaches, Crane Beach in Barbados. After a few years eyeing this luxury resort, I decided to book a stay in one of the one-bedroom suites with a garden pool for a week’s getaway.

Just a short trip away from the airport, hotel guests arrive at check in after traversing the lush drive, where the tropical greenery is filled with birds. The historic resort’s elegant style carries from the check-in and concierge space, with its airy feel and open windows, into the rest of the property, including the adjacent Crane Village, the resort’s retail and dining hub.

After checking in, I was led to my suite, which exceeded expectations. The foyer opened to a large living space with plenty of seating, as well as the master bedroom with a king bed and two large closets. A full kitchen with service for four offered everything one might need to cook for a family, as well as a breakfast bar and a washer and dryer tucked away in a closet. The bathroom wasn’t as luxurious as I was hoping given the resort’s status, unfortunately; there were few bath amenities and no soaking tub.

The suite’s real selling point, however, is its private outdoor space. Off my patio with seating, there was an additional gazebo with a dining table, chaise lounges, a hot tub and a private pool. All was surrounded by an array of plants, including tropical flowers, palm trees and other greenery to give the impression of a tiny oasis.

I found the dining at the resort good across the board, for the most part. All restaurants served excellent versions of the local cuisine, including the Bajan favorites of fried flying fish and rum punch, but the takes on international cuisine left something to be desired.

Crane Beach itself lives up to its reputation. The white sands are surrounded by rocky cliff sides and thick greenery, giving it a dramatic, remote vibe. The beach can be reached via a long staircase from the resort’s place on the overlooking cliff, or via an elevator. An on-site beach bar provides cocktails and light bites. At no point during my stay was the beach crowded.
