The cubic houses of Rotterdam are famous for their quirky design and, when visiting the city, are hard not to notice. Built directly overtop a pedestrian bridge, they were created to serve a need for housing where space was tight. Today, we’re fortunate one of the residents opened up his cube house to visitors.
Dutch architect Piet Blom designed The Cube Houses in the 1970s. Blom took the traditional, cube-shaped house and tilted it 45 degrees, then placed it on a hexagonal-shaped pylon. Each house has three distinct floors and roughly 100 square meters of space, but no straight walls. There are 38 houses altogether, each connected in one long row.
The Show House, or museum, is open to the public and offers a unique look at the inside of these amazing structures. Just watch your head, because the ceilings can get pretty short! I found the cube house fascinating, though feel people are crazy to live there. It does offer incredible views of the harbor, though!
If you’re really itching to know what living in a cubic house would feel like, you can book a room in the StayOkay Hostel, located in one of the cubes. I wasn’t daring enough to give that a shot, but I imagine it would make for a great story.
