The Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, is a hidden gem close by the city of Trenton. The 42-acre art exhibit, once the New Jersey State Fairgrounds, makes the perfect place to spend the day in the spring, summer and early fall. Opened in 1992 to the public, the grounds grew to include workings from artists such as Clement Meadmore, Beverly Pepper and Kiki Smith.
When we arrived on a brisk fall morning, we had to get in a long line of cars waiting to enter. The day was perfect with sunshine, but not humid or too hot. We looked at the map and decided on which way we would head — start at the back and head to the gates. We marveled at the different art pieces and took a rest on one of the many benches to people watch for a bit.
The grounds have so much to look at, with large sculptures that tower over the average person to interactive pieces with mist and music. Maintenance keeps the park clean and manicured, which makes everything look better. We stopped for drinks at the lakeside concession stand, priced at $7 each. The grounds also has a nice restaurant on site, but we ate before entering the park.
After spending a couple of hours, we decided to head home. We saw just about every art piece in the park but did not go to any of the indoor galleries. Admission to the park is $18 for adults.
