The Bahá’í faith is a minority religion that began in the mid-19th century in Persia. This peaceful religion grew in popularity and has around 6 million followers worldwide. Its underlying message is unity of God, religion and the faithful. Despite its peaceful message, the religion is outlawed in Iran and Egypt.

Although there are holy sites for the religion throughout the world, there are also temples present on each continent where Bahá’í is practiced. A beautiful example of this faith in North America is actually in Wilmette, Illinois. This stunning temple was first thought of in 1903 by a small group of practicing Bahá’í in Chicago. They slowly raised the funds and began building in 1921, but the temple wasn’t open to the public until 1953 due to delays caused by the Great Depression and World War II.

The Temple was designed by the Canadian architect Louis Bourgeois and is surrounded by nine gardens. Bourgeois’ plan was to create a temple to truth illuminated from within. It is truly a unique structure. Tours are available, but you can also enjoy a virtual tour. The temple in Wilmette is the oldest-standing structure in the world dedicated to the Bahá’í faith.
