The Sailing Museum debuts in Newport, Rhode Island, May 10. The new museum is located on the waterfront in downtown Newport in the historic Armory Building.
“The museum is Newport and Rhode Island’s newest cultural institution and tourist attraction and is directly tied to the heritage and identity of the Ocean State,” said Heather Ruhsam, executive director, The Sailing Museum. “Opening the museum fulfills a longstanding vision of the organization’s founders. A dream 17 years in the making, made possible by the work and support of so many individuals who came together to make this truly stunning location a reality. The Sailing Museum is not only intended to preserve the history of the sport, but to educate and inspire future sailors and innovators.”
The museum will be home to the National Sailing Hall of Fame and America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Explore high- and low-tech interactive exhibits demonstrating the principles of sailing. The exhibits allow trained sailors to test their skills and novice sailors to begin their sailing journey. The highly personalized experience begins with selecting a boat, which becomes the guest’s avatar throughout the museum visit. Guests travel through interactive elements, build skills and even earn virtual rewards. In addition to the permanent exhibits, educational programming will take place throughout the year.
The museum will be open daily, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. General admission costs $18. Admission is complimentary for seniors, students, military and children under 10.
