The Story of the Bullet Train in Japan

Japan is known for its high-speed, comfortable bullet trains, also known as Shinkansen. One of the most notable train journeys is the 318-mile Tokaido route from Tokyo to Kyoto, which offers breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji — the highest peak in Japan.

Destinations / Asia

Japan’s bullet trains, known as Shinkansen, were first introduced in 1964.

The world’s first high-speed rail line connected Tokyo and Osaka, opening in time for the 1964 Olympics. These days there are more than 1,700 miles of high-speed track connecting the country, with a maximum speed of 200 mph.

The original line carried 5.6 billion passengers in total since it opened, and its larger trains can carry more than 1,300 passengers. It’s a remarkable feat, and the network inspired high-speed rail projects around the world.

While overall rider numbers have declined slightly, there are still plans to extend the network. Tourists have become major users of the network, more convenient than flying for most destinations. It’s also more comfortable and something of a must-do for first-time visitors to the country.

Visitors to Japan can make use of the network on single tickets or as part of a Japan Railways pass. There are some restrictions on which services you can use, but this is a great way to get around the country. For example you can get from Tokyo to Hiroshima in less than five hours, and in perfect comfort.

Interior Upgrades Begin Rolling Out Across United Fleet

United Airlines is in the midst of a major initiative to modernize its fleet over the next several years. After first announcing the plan in 2021, planes fitted with United’s signature interior are finally beginning to appear across the airline’s narrowbody fleet of Boeing and Airbus planes. United flyers are sure to notice these enhancements from the moment they step on board: Each new or updated plane sports remodeled seats, seatback entertainment screens for everyone, Bluetooth connectivity and more, all adding up to a better experience on every journey.
