The Polish city of Gdansk sits on the Baltic coast, acting as the country’s most important port as well as one of its biggest tourist attractions.
One of the main sights in the city is the Royal Way. This ancient path winds from the old city gate to the Motlawa River, passing historis buildings such as the Prison Tower and Neptune’s Fountain, as well as reconstructed edifices that date back to the 1300s.
Next up is the European Solidarity Centre, a recently opened museum that celebrates the achievements of trades unions. It’s a spectacular piece of architecture, and the exhibitions are always thought-provoking.
Head to the old town to see Ulica Mariacka, one of the most beautiful thoroughfares in Gdansk. These days it’s home to souvenir stalls and charming cafés, making it a favorite with tourists and dating couples alike.
If you happen to be in town July and August, look out for the Shakespeare Festival. This annual event is held in a theater built on the site of a 17th-century playhouse, and the program is highly regarded in international theater circles.
