Bite into a dish in Iceland and you’ll savor the cornerstone of a country’s reliable staples of dried fish, lamb and hearty vegetables. Although you might expect to find odd delicacies in Iceland like chocolate-covered licorice, you probably wouldn’t think hot dogs would trend on a traveler’s “must-eat” list.
Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur is primarily regarded as the most famous hot dog kiosk in Iceland. Opened since 1937, the stand was always popular, but rose to infamy when President Clinton stopped for a bite during a visit. Soon every travel guidebook started writing about Icelandic hot dogs and recommending a stop at the unassuming stand.
Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur has several locations throughout Iceland, and it’s not uncommon to see a line of tourists and locals waiting for their turn. Unlike the hot dogs you’ll find at American ballparks and fast food eateries, the Icelandic hot dog is lamb-based and served plain or with ketchup, mustard onion, and a sweet mayonnaise dressing of remoulade.
In case you’re wondering, President Clinton only wanted mustard on his pylsur. But that hasn’t stopped tourists from asking for theirs with the works. Try one for yourself and nibble on your Icelandic hot dog while gazing at the photos of political figures and celebrities who stopped to eat one, too.
