This summer, the Olympic Games in Tokyo were sure to take center stage on television screens around the world, but June 6–July 12, soccer fans would also have had their eyes on Europe as UEFA’s Euro 2020 championships were set to take place. COVID-19 had other ideas, though. Both sporting events have been postponed to summer 2021. Regardless of the delay, you can still prepare for next summer’s event. Euro 2020 will be held June 12–July 12, 2021.
Unlike past tournaments, 2020 was to be the first year the tournament actually traveled around Europe and Eurasia to venues in 12 cities, in 12 different countries. This gives football fans a chance to get in on some of the action without having to travel too far. UEFA plans to have the same 12 host cities in 2021, as well.
The matches would kick off in Rome and the final held in London. During the tournament, 24 teams will play in various countries, some of which did not qualify for the tournament. The host cities were to be Amsterdam; Baku, Azerbaijan; Bilbao, Spain; Bucharest; Budapest; Copenhagen; Dublin; Glasgow; London; Munich; Rome; and St. Petersburg.
There is sure to be a frenzy of celebratory activity in the cities during the tournament, especially as people will be forced to wait an additional year, so if you happen to be near one of the host cities, you can still take part in the festivities. It also may be a good opportunity to visit spots you’ve long had on your list. Plus, you have more time to plan now.
